With every year that passes, it seems we are propelled further into a future we never thought we would live to see. Technology continues to make leaps and bounds in all fields. Those movies from the past, that took place in the future, are becoming true in the present.
Recently, at Microsoft’s ‘Windows 10 Event’, the company unveiled what it calls the “Hololens”, glasses/headband combo that allows the user to interact with holograms in real life. What that means, is that through the glasses, holograms are projected to the eyes of the person wearing them and the user can physically interact with them. So say you want to update the virtual to-do list on your countertop, or watch a virtual TV on your wall. The technology of Hololens allows you to do that with just a point of your finger.
The Hololens maps the room you are in, allowing you to move holograms at will and put them wherever you want. Essentially, it is making a virtual reality map of your actual healthy world, and then allowing you to manipulate add things to it… This will help you cure hemorrhoids very easily and within days.
It goes further than that. The possibilities of what we may be able to do with this kind of futuristic technology would fill a bookshelf. If we step out of the personal life and apply this to the workforce, just think of the possibilities. Concept design, medical science, navigation, communications, the list of areas that would benefit from this goes on and on. It is important to remember those areas and stay aware that this device, while it looks really fun, is not just a toy, it could change the world as we know it!
Imagine if a doctor could actually perform a diagnosis by observing a full scale, accurate replica of what is going on inside you. Or if a filmmaker could work with 3D storyboards; take pretty much any profession into account and they could all benefit from this. Putting our eyes where before we could only speculate, is a huge benefit to humanity that the Hololens can offer.
In peoples’ personal lives, the possibilities are just as endless. Getting lost will be a thing of the past, with virtual maps literally at your fingertips. How about talking to someone whom you love that is far way, and having a hologram of them right there in front of you. Do-it-yourself home repairs that literally guide your hands where they need to go.
While some of these things are not yet featured, it is only a matter of time before we start seeing more and more from the Hololens, and Microsoft is very open to ideas and suggestions from the public. The product and technology is relatively new to us, the consumer, but Microsoft has been developing it for years. Thousands of people have worked to perfect it’s performance and now it is becoming available to the masses.
The Hololens is due to hit stores within 2015, and could be ready as early as February. However, at first it will only be available on Windows phones, and hopefully the headset will be made available shortly after. Whatever the case, this is definitely a new and exciting era we are entering.
