A person who decides to seek treatment from a psychologist is required to answer a number of questions. The first questions are how to choose a psychologist. A psychologist’s selection process should weigh the patient’s options – their financial options, their free time, their commitments, and so on, against the information he or she will be able to obtain about one or other potential psychologist.

A key question in this weighting process is, “What psychologist do I need?
Let us now consider a number of factors that influence the answer given by a person to this question.
The first counter-question to ask a person who is debating such a question is simple: “What problems do you suffer from?”, Or another wording: “What bothers you? Why do you want to go to a psychologist?”

It is possible, for example, that a person doing a mental reckoning will find that most of the problems that trouble him originate in the spousal domain, such as endless quarrels with his or her spouse. In such a case, it may be advisable for him to seek spousal treatment with his or her spouse and not necessarily for individual treatment by a psychologist.  Anyway, if you are feeling that you are mental exhausted you should seek counselling.

Another possibility is that a person should first consult a psychiatrist and not a psychologist. Many psychological distresses are now being treated by psychiatric drugs, while being treated by a psychologist. Symptoms such as depression, anxiety, fears of various kinds and other mental disorders are very common. Since only a psychiatrist is authorized to prescribe such drugs, he should be contacted for this purpose.

Other options, in addition to private psychologist treatment, are different treatment groups. In many settings, there are today groups of different types, whose participants have similar problems. This is how groups of anxiety and illnesses and other mental health problems can be found.

Another option beyond the treatment of a psychologist are different therapeutic methods that specialize in psychological therapy that is combined with another activity. These groups include drama therapy, called drama therapy, art therapy, literature therapy, bibliotherapy therapy, music therapy and more.

Even after a person has looked at all the different options and concluded that he needed a psychologist’s treatment, his deliberation did not end. Psychology encompasses different currents and methods, which differ in their basic assumptions, in their perceptions of the person and their mind, in their beliefs about the right methods of treatment, throughout their treatment and intensity, and more.
Therefore, if possible, you should be interested in the different therapeutic schools and their character and check which school each psychologist to whom we refer. This information may help us understand its therapeutic method and decide if it is the right method for us.
